Sasural ka pehla din

The first rays of the sun slipped through the carved wooden jharokha, painting the room in a golden glow. Ved stirred awake, his arm instinctively tightening around the figure beside him.

Vedita lay curled against his chest, her soft hair spread across his bare skin like a silken veil. The heavy bridal ornaments lay scattered on the table, forgotten in the whirlwind of the night's stolen kisses and whispered promises.

Her pallu had slipped somewhere in the night, leaving her upper body bare against the warmth of his embrace. She stirred slightly, her eyelashes fluttering as she slowly woke, realizing she was nestled so close to her husband that her breath matched his heartbeat.

For a moment, neither spoke-just the quiet rhythm of two souls wrapped in one another.

Ved brushed a strand of hair from her face. His touch was gentle and reverent.

"Uth gayi ?" he asked softly, voice husky from sleep.

(Are you up?)

Vedita's cheeks flushed. Her gaze lowered but she didn't pull away. Instead, she whispered,

"Aap... abhi bhi mujhe itni zor se pakade hue hai?"

(Why are you still h

A faint smile curved on Ved's lips. "Shayad darr lagta hai... kahi tu sapna na ban jaye."

(I think I'm scared... what if you became a dream?)

Her heart skipped a beat at his words. She closed her eyes again, resting her head against his chest, whispering almost to herself,

"Agar sapna hoon, toh main chahti hoon ki aap kabhi na jaago."

(If I'm a dream then I don't want you to ever wake up)

He pressed a kiss to her forehead, lingering there, as if sealing the moment.

The morning carried the fragrance of marigolds from the courtyard, the distant sounds of the haveli waking up but within their room, time seemed to pause, holding them in a cocoon of tenderness and unspoken passion.

After about half an hour Vedita came out of his arms unwantedly making him whine like a child

"Arey thodi aur der reh ja na mere paas"

(Arey be with me for a little more time)

Vedita shook her head at his childish behaviour

"Kon kahega aap ek gaon ke Thakur Shahab hai, baccho ki tarah zidd kar rahe hai "

(Who will say you're Thakur Shahab of a village, you're being stubborn like a kid)

"Thakur hu toh kya hua, mujhe kya apni nayi naveli dulhan ko pyaar karne ka dil nahi karta. Kya hum Thakuron ki icchaye nahi hoti?" he said dramatically

(So what if I'm a Thakur? Don't I also feel like loving my newlywed bride? Do we Thakurs not have desires?)

"Arey maaf kijiye mujhe, aapse behes mein nahi jeet sakti main par jaana toh hoga na warna sab kya kahenge dekho kaisi biwi laaye hai Thakur Shahab, Suraj chadhne tak ghode bech ke soti hai "

(Oh, forgive me, I can never win an argument with you. But I must go, otherwise what will people say? Look what kind of wife Thakur Sahab has brought-she sleeps soundly till the sun is high in the sky.)

Vedita touched her ears and tried to coo him

"Mujhe bhala logo se kya lena, mujhe toh bas meri Vedita apni baahon mein chahiye."

(Why do I care about people? All I want is my Vedita in my arms.)

Vedita just blushed at his reply

"Bas ab bahut hua aapka chaliye uthiye warna main Arjun ji ko bula dungi wahi aapko sambhalenge"

(Now it's enough, get up or else I'll call Arjun ji, he will only handle you)

"Arjun kyu sambhalenga? Bas ek raat mein hi thak gayi Thakurain?"

(Why Arjun will handle? You're tired just in a single night, Thakurain?)

Vedita narrowed her eyes at him while buttoning her blouse quickly

"Kuch jayada nahi bolte hai aap?"

(Don't you think you speak too much?)

"Toh chup kara do Thakurain" he said looking at her lips hungrily

(Then make me shut, Thakurain)

"Dhatt, subah subah yehi sab sujh raha hai aapko"

(Oh, come on! Is this all you can think about so early in the morning?)

He pulled her into her arms crashing her lips against his before saying

"Sujh kya raha, main toh karunga bhi"

(Not just think about it-I'm going to do it too.)

Vedita lightly pushed him when they broke the kiss

"Aap bahut gande hai " she said pouting

(You're so bad)

"Ab toh jaisa bhi hu aapka hi hu meri Thakurain "

(Now, no matter how I am, I am yours alone, my Thakurain.)

Vedita laughed at him

"Ji aap bhi na, chaliya ab"

(Oh, you're too much... let's go now)

"Jo hukum meri jaan"

(As you command,my jaan)

After a while everyone gathered in the angan.

The haveli bustled with energy the morning after the wedding. Women gathered with trays of sweets, sindoor and coins. While laughter echoed through the courtyards. Today was filled with rituals-each one a test, each one a step into Vedita's new life.

"Chaliya dewar ji"

(Come on, brother in law)

His bhabhi, Suman, teased. Her eyes were twinkling.

"Sharmaiye mat apni nayi dulhan se! Yeh santi khelne ka samay hai"

(Don't be shy with your new bride! It's time for the santi.)

She held up two slender, freshly cut neem twigs. One she handed to Vedita, its pale green leaves rustling softly. The other she pressed into Ved's reluctant hand.

Ved's jaw tightened, not out of anger but restraint. A man who carried the weight of responsibility with every breath, he had never believed in games that risked hurting someone-least of all her.

Even the thought of raising a stick, even in jest, made his chest heavy. His gaze drifted to Vedita, who sat with playful fire in her eyes behind her veil . His hand stilled. He could endure taunts, laughter, anything... but he would never allow even the shadow of pain touch her.

Across the courtyard, Arjun leaned lazily against a pillar. His grin widened .He knew exactly why his elder brother was holding back, and that only made the teasing sweeter.

"Don't worry, Ved," Arjun called out, winking. "Just do as she does. It's simple!"

Vedita, sensing his hesitation, took a breath and bravely made the first move. With a gentle tap of her stick, she flicked at Ved's forearm. It was a soft, almost imperceptible gesture but the crowd erupted in a delighted chorus of hoots and claps.

Emboldened, Vedita tapped him again, a little faster this time.

Ved flinched with his eyes wide. He held his stick awkwardly, unsure of what to do. His bhabhi leaned in, whispering,

"Tap her back lightly, you simpleton! It's a game!"

He lifted his hand but his movement was slow and clumsy. Vedita, with the agile grace of a gazelle, easily dodged him, giggling. The sound was like a melody in the silent, tense moments of their married life. The family cheered for her, delighted by the new bride's spirit.

After a few times he stopped

"Arjun! Tu ja!"

"Arjun! You go!" Ved suddenly pleaded, thrusting his stick towards him.

The crowd roared with laughter. Arjun moved from the pillar and into the circle.

"Mahir insaan par chod do yeh,Ved"

"Leave it to the experts, Ved," he said, taking the stick.

He faced Ved, feigning seriousness. The men in the family began clapping their hands on their thighs, creating a rhythm.

Arjun began to tap Vedita playfully. His movements were quick and rhythmic like a village dance. He intentionally tapped a little hard making Vedita flich

"Arjun" Ved's voice roared as Arjun expected making him laugh at his protectiveness.

"What's the matter bhabhi?" he joked, swiping at Vedita's back "Lost your rhythm?"

Vedita too hit him a little hard making crowd cheer and Ved smirked at Arjun.

As the game escalated between the cousins, Vedita's shy smile turned into a genuine laugh. She watched her husband playing with her bhabhi and saw a part of him only she had known-the playful boy beneath the serious man coming out in front of everyone.

Later, the women of the village gathered for the "muh dikhai".

First her mother in law came and lifted her veil, she blessed her and gave her haveli's keys cluster making Sarla's heart burn like fire.

Then one by one, women lifted her veil and admired the new Thakurain. Gifts of bangles, sarees and coins were placed before her.

Sarla, with her ever-poisoned tongue, leaned forward.

"Sundarta toh hai, par haveli chalana sirf shakal se nahi hota. Dekhte hain kaise nibhaati ho."

(You do have beauty, but running a haveli isn't done with looks alone. Let's see how well you manage it.)

Vedita raised her chin, her voice calm but firm.

"Aap bilkul sahi keh rahi hain, Chachi. Par haveli sirf ek aurat nahi, poore parivaar ke saath chalti hai. Aap sabka saath hoga, toh main bhi apna farz nibhaungi."

(You are absolutely right, Chachi. But a haveli isn't run by just one woman, but with the support of the whole family. If I have all of you by my side, I too will fulfill my duty.)

The women murmured in approval. Sarla's smirk faltered and Ved's mother looked at Vedita with new eyes-impressed by the way she turned a taunt into wisdom.

---

By afternoon, the *pehli rasoi* began. A mud chulha was lit in the haveli's kitchen. Vedita, dressed in a fresh red saree sat down with a calm focus.

Sarla hovered like a vulture again.

"Thik se chulha jalana, varna khana kachcha reh jaayega."

(Lit the chulha properly or else food will remain raw)

Vedita didn't even look up.

"Chinta mat kijiye, chulha bhi samajh gaya hai ki aaj nayi Thakurain ka din hai."

(Don't worry, the stove also understood that today is new Thakurain's day)

Her hands worked steadily-melting ghee, roasting flour, adding sugar and dry fruits. Soon, the aroma of warm "halwa" filled the haveli.

When it was served, Dadi was the first to taste. Her wrinkled face broke into a smile

.

"Mithas bilkul waisi jaise ghar ko chahiye... garam, swadisht, aur dil se bani hui."

She happily gave her a gold necklace, Vedita hesitated and looked at Ved , she only accepted it when he nodded his head. This silent gesture was seen was his dadi and mother.

(Sweetness just the way a home needs it... warm, delicious, and made from the heart.)

The family ate in silence, then slowly nodded in approval. Even Ved's mother, usually silent said softly,

"Bura nahi banaya."

(It's not bad)

Arjun, licking his spoon dramatically, declared,

"Ab to main roz bhabhi ke haath ka halwa khaoonga. Ved, sambhal ke... ghar ke saare raaz ab inhi ke khane se khulne wale hain."

(From now on, I'll be eating Bhabhi's halwa every day. Ved, be careful... all the secrets of this house are about to be revealed through her cooking.")

Everyone laughed, and Vedita lowered her eyes shyly-but beneath her veil, she caught the stiff faces of Sarla and Ratan Singh. Not everyone

was happy.

Still, she had passed every test of the day-with wit, courage and grace.

And in a quiet corner, Ved's mother thought to herself, "Shayad yeh ladki iss haveli ki raksha bhi karegi."

That's it for today
